1854- The Convention of Kanagawa is signed
1863- Emperor Kōmei issues the "Order to Expel Barbarians" (results in attacks on foreigners and foreign ships, which ends in retaliation from foreign forces)
1866- Tokugawa Yoshinobu (the last shogun) assumed his role as shogun
1853 to 1867- Bakumatsu: Japan ends its Sakoku policies and shifts from a feudal, military shogunate rule to the Meiji government
